If your employees use computers, laptops, or tablets as a significant part of their work, you have a legal duty to carry out a DSE (Display Screen Equipment) assessment. Many employers are unaware of this requirement, but it applies to virtually every office-based workplace in the UK.
What Is DSE?
DSE stands for Display Screen Equipment and covers any device with a screen used for work, including desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. The regulations also cover the workstation setup: the desk, chair, keyboard, mouse, and surrounding environment.
The Legal Requirement
The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 (as amended) require employers to:
- Carry out a workstation assessment for every employee who uses DSE regularly
- Reduce any risks identified by the assessment
- Ensure workstations meet minimum ergonomic requirements
- Provide eye tests on request (and corrective glasses if needed specifically for DSE work)
- Provide information and training on DSE risks and how to set up workstations correctly
- Plan work to include regular breaks from screen work
What Does a DSE Assessment Cover?
A typical DSE assessment checks:
- Screen — position, brightness, contrast, and angle
- Chair — adjustability, lumbar support, seat height and depth
- Desk — size, height, space for equipment and documents
- Keyboard and mouse — position, type, wrist support
- Lighting — glare, reflections, and overall light levels
- Environment — temperature, noise, and space
- Software — ease of use and suitability for the task
Common Health Problems from Poor DSE Setup
Poorly set up workstations can cause or worsen:
- Back pain and neck pain
- Repetitive strain injury (RSI)
- Eye strain and headaches
- Shoulder and wrist problems
- Fatigue
These are among the most common causes of workplace absence in the UK. A proper DSE assessment and training can prevent them.
Do Home Workers Need DSE Assessments?
Yes. The DSE Regulations apply equally to employees working from home. If your staff work from home regularly, you must assess their home workstation and provide guidance on correct setup. Many employers provide self-assessment checklists for home workers.
