Fire Awareness Month: The Right Prompt, the Wrong Deadline

A workplace training session in a modern meeting room

October and its fire awareness campaigns are a genuinely useful nudge. Every year they push fire marshal training back up the to-do list, and plenty of businesses finally get it booked. That is a good thing. The mistake is treating the month itself as the deadline, and cramming training in just because it is October. Your training should follow your needs, not the calendar.

Why October is a good prompt

Awareness months work because they break the habit of putting things off. If a campaign is the reason you finally check whether your marshals are still trained and still here, it has done its job. Use the prompt. Look at your cover, look at when anyone last trained, and be honest about the gaps.

Why it is the wrong deadline

The problem comes when the month becomes the only reason. Training booked in a rush, to tick October off, tends to be the wrong level, the wrong number of people, or squeezed in when it does not suit the team. Fire marshal cover is a year-round need. It does not reset every autumn, and it does not stop mattering in November. What matters is that you always have enough trained people, whatever the month.

A calmer, more confident team

There is a wider benefit worth naming, and October gives it a nice hook with World Mental Health Day on the 10th. A team that knows exactly what to do if the alarm sounds is a calmer team. Confidence comes from clear roles and recent practice, not from a certificate nobody remembers doing. Training people properly takes the anxiety out of an emergency, because everyone knows their part.

What the law expects

You need enough trained people to keep everyone safe and help them evacuate, kept up to date, at all times of year. The requirement does not begin or end with an awareness month.

Do this instead of chasing the date

Let need set the timing

  • Check how many trained marshals you actually have on site right now.
  • Book training to fix real gaps, not just to close out the month.
  • Match the level and numbers to your premises and risks.
  • Put a plan in place for keeping cover topped up through the year.

Your questions answered

Is October the deadline for fire marshal training?

No. Awareness campaigns are a helpful prompt, but fire marshal cover is a year-round need. Train when you have a gap, whatever the month.

How many fire marshals should we have?

Enough that trained cover is always on site, across shifts, holidays and sickness. The right number comes from your premises, numbers and risks.

Does training really help with team confidence?

Yes. People who know their role and have practised it recently stay calmer in an emergency, which is better for everyone involved.
