How Often Do Fire Marshals Need Refresher Training?

People in high-visibility vests on a workplace safety walkaround

It is one of the questions we get asked most, and the honest answer surprises people. There is no fixed legal date stamped on fire marshal training that says you must retrain by a certain day. What the rules actually require is that you have enough trained people and that their training is kept up to date. That gives you more flexibility than a rigid rule, but it also puts the judgement on you. Here is how to get it right.

What the rules actually say

The duty on an employer is to appoint a sufficient number of competent people to help carry out the fire safety measures, including helping everyone evacuate safely. Their training has to be adequate, and it has to be kept current. What the rules do not do is set a single retraining interval that applies to every business. The right frequency depends on your premises, your risks and your people.

The recognised good practice

Because there is no fixed legal date, the training industry works to a widely accepted rule of thumb. Fire marshal refresher training is generally recommended around every three years, and more often than that where the risk is higher or where staff change frequently. Many workplaces also run a short annual top-up or a fire drill in between, to keep the knowledge fresh rather than leaving a long gap.

What the law expects

You must have enough trained people to keep everyone safe and help them evacuate, and you must keep that training up to date. How often you refresh is your judgement, based on your risks.

When you should refresh sooner

A date on a certificate is not the only trigger. You should bring training forward if your circumstances change:

  • You have altered the layout, changed the building, or added new risks.
  • Trained marshals have left, so your cover has dropped.
  • A fire drill or a real incident showed people were unsure what to do.
  • New marshals have taken on the role and have not been trained yet.

How to tell your marshals are due

Signs a refresher is overdue

  • It has been about three years or more since anyone trained.
  • You are not sure how many trained marshals you currently have.
  • Your last fire drill was hesitant or disorganised.
  • The people named on your fire plan no longer work here.

Your questions answered

Is there a legal fire marshal refresher period?

No fixed one. The law requires enough competent, trained people and that their training stays up to date. It does not set a single date that applies to everyone.

How often is refresher training recommended?

Around every three years as a general guide, and more often for higher-risk premises or where staff change a lot, with shorter top-ups or drills in between.

What if my trained marshals have left?

Then your cover has dropped and you should train replacements without waiting for any date. Cover is about having enough trained people on site, not about the calendar.
